Pillows and Felt Houses
Nationally regarded community artist Deanna Skedel worked with the Office of Homeless Liaison Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Arts and Academic tutoring program, Fall 2007 to Spring 2008. Deanna met every Thursday evening with a group of homeless students at M.E. Pearson Elementary School and lead the children in the production of arts and craft gifts for their families and friends for the holiday season. The children created pillows, books, journals, drawings and bookmarks as holiday gifts. The project concluded with the children, assisted by Deanna, creating a mobile play house made of plastic and felt. The playhouse functions both as an art work and as safe haven for the participating youth. The playhouse will be exhibited in art galleries and public spaces over the next year.
